Poker Frustrations
Low limit poker can drive a player mad. You fold hand after hand only to watch less discriminating players win piles of chips with lesser hands that have no business seeing a flop much less a river card. It's a situation ripe with potential, but the amount of patience necessary to make a score can be a battle in itself.
First of all, the cards aren't necessarily going to fall your way even when you do everything right. You could have the best hand when the cards are dealt and follow it up with the proper betting, but the flop could change everything. This is especially true when the majority of your opponents hold on to every hand they are dealt. With more players still in the pot, your odds of winning, no matter how good your hand is initially, will go down fast if you don't hit something promising on the flop.
When the cards do fall your way however, and all these players continue to call your bets blindly, that's where you make your killing. It's the fantasy of every player to be in that situation. You sit calmly at the table watching the players around you as they throw their chips into the pile without a second thought and continue to do so all the way to the river. When they are finally forced to show their cards to the table, they confirm your assumptions that they are calling every hand that crosses their path with no regard for their likelihood of winning or the possible hands of the other players. It's free money.
To get this money, you have to sit patiently and not fall into the trap of stooping to their level. You can't start calling in every scenario just to get into the game. You must stick to your strategy. You must continue to play the best hands possible and save your valuable chips by discarding the hands that will leave you chasing.
In certain positions and situations you should absolutely try to catch a golden flop that will win you the lottery in the middle of the table, but only when your losses will be minimized for a pot that will be rewarding. Depending on your cards, you should let your calling criteria slack just a little bit when you're in the blinds. Try to get that large return on the smaller investment.
Patience is the key though. You must be prepared to fold over and over again to finally get that hand that will remain a winner from start to finish at a table of callers.
